1836 Hémann Geography 6 MAPS Bizarre & Inaccurate Cartography, 3 Plates, SCARCE

Nouveau Manuel de Géographie. Sextodecimo, Frontispiece + 303 pp. + 6 lithograph folding maps and 2 illustrations, Dépôt des Nouveaux Manuels, Paris, 1836. We are pleased to offer this scarce example of something of a cartographic curiosity – a geographical treatise by one H. Hémann of whom little is known other than that he published several other works on geography, astronomy and metereology in the 1830s and was referred to as “Professeur”. Well written in clear conversational French, the work veers off the rails into oddness with its six maps – they are shockingly inaccurate, haphazardly executed and full of misconceptions that would seem impossible for a geographic work published in the 1830s – all of which actually gives them a certain appeal for the modern collector. One can only presume that the publisher added these maps and plates as they seem to have nothing at all in common with the quality of Professeur Hémann’s work. The small volume retains its original or a very early binding, worn but entirely serviceable. We begin our survey of the plates with the charming frontispiece showing a finely dressed couple examining a map and globe. But then look at this detail from the North America map – the entire Pacific Northwest is drawn as if on a map that predated Cook’s Voyages. Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii are nowhere to be seen and the Alaskan archipelagos so carefully delineated in the text are absent. Speaking of Cook, his 18th century charting of Newfoundland was so precise it would be perfectly safe to navigate with today, yet look at the amorphous blob drawn on this map for Newfoundland. There might be a putative lower peninsula of Michigan if one uses some imagination but otherwise unidentfiable. The depiction of Mexico descends into complete incoherence on the same map. In his text, Professeur Hémann carefully names the individual principal islands of Japan and Sakhalin Island – yet on the Asia map the latter is entirely absent and the former a bizarre single entity. Even the Europe map is sloppy – note careless representation of the shape of Sicily, misshapen Scotland, Vienna shown southwest of Dresden etc. The twin-hemisphere Mappemonde is reminiscent of a free-hand map drawn on a grid by a not particularly talented school child. Africa map outline reasonably accurate but interior is filled with entirely speculative river courses. Title page is not dated, but the notice of publication is recorded in the 1836 Bibliographie de la France. Not wishing to be outdone, the South America map proudly presents the Galapagos Islands off the southernmost coast of Chile. The previously discussed North America map in its entirety – 16 cm x 13 cm image size typical of these folding maps which are inserted at the end of the text. Apropos of nothing two plates of laughably crude sketches of mythological figures are presented. The lithographer must have taken minutes and minutes drawing these images onto the stone. Condition – Please note carefully: Volume is in good condition, boards worn, scraped and cracked, spine in good shape, binding sound and contents secured. The lithograph folding maps are in very good condition with only a couple trivial spots and can be evaluated in photos. The charming frontispiece is a steelplate engraving and is very well executed. Text in good condition with just a little trivial scattered browning. Welcome and we encourage you to visit our other auctions. Such charges are typically collected by the courier, e.
