44 cm x 26 cm copperplate engraving, 49 cm x 29 cm sheet size, contemporary hand colour, Amsterdam, circa 1675. We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the classic folio frontispiece used in a number of editions of the great Zee-Atlas from the father and son engravers and publishers Frederik de Wit. The De Wits are rightly considered among the finest mapmakers in the “Golden Age” of Dutch cartography as their maps are distinguished for their beauty of composition and exceptionally fine engraving work – attributes exemplified in this attractive frontispiece. Here the De Wits present Atlas. As the primordial Titan who supported the vault of the heavens above the earth in Greek mythology. Probably due to the fame of the Farnese Atlas. Showing an Atlas figure supporting a celestial globe on his shoulders, the myth became distorted over time to have Atlas supporting the earth rather than the heavens and the original celestial globe became terrestrial in popular imagination. A classic image in every sense, this handsomely engraved 17th century plate will make an elegant presentation if matted and framed. The cartography is notable for a large but indefinite Terra Australis incorporating New Guinea, a pictorial depiction of the Great Wall of China, a vast central lake in Africa shown as the source of several major rivers including the Nile, an insular Novaya Zemlya and a wildly distorted Caspian Sea. Note gilt lettering, delicate burin work for musculature. Condition – Please note carefully: This 335-year-old print is in overall very good condition as can be ascertained from photos, strong impression with prominent platemark, attractive hand colour, no text on verso, image area essentially pristine. Close trim to top margin just outside platemark and left margin trimmed beyond platemark and attached to old binding strip which exhibits creasing and some soiling. Print exhibits an old repair to minor tear from top margin extending 3 cm into image just to the right of the “S” in “ATLAS” before terminating as can be seen in the detail photo thereof, scarcely noticeable.
