Cruchley’s General Atlas for the use of Schools and Private Tuition, containing the following Thirty-One Superior Maps. 3 Mercator’s World. 4 Europe (General Map). 9 Norway and Sweden. 10 Russia in Europe. 11 Holland and Belgium. 13 Spain and Portugal. 18 Turkey in Europe and Greece. 19 Asia (General Map). 23 Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, Cabul, &c. 26 Australia, New Zealand, and East India Islands. 27 Africa (General Map). 29 America (General Map), 30 United States with Upper and Lower Canada. 31 West India Islands. Cruchley, Mapseller & Globe Maker, 81, Fleet St. A genuine Victorian Atlas published in 1857 by the celebrated Map Maker George Frederick Cruchley (1797 – 1880). With 31 maps of the World as it was then known, each full double-page printed on one side of the sheet only, and each with original handcolouring. The whole in a sympathetically restored state, making a particularly impressive such Atlas. Each map contains fascinating detail: the World Maps reveal the lack of knowledge about the Poles, with some very vague landforms south of Australia. Australia itself is clearly unexplored in the centre, the journey of Charles Sturt in 1845 being noted, and that of Kennedy. Lake Torrens, discovered in 1839, receives an elaborate depiction. Within Europe there are detailed maps of England and Scotland, and of course the various states within each European Country are well displayed. Italy for example has 9 divisions including States of the Church. An imprint at the bottom of each map suggest many of them date from the 1840s, with additions to 1856. They all have a decorative crest at the top incorporating the Prince of Wales’s Feathers. All in all, an outstanding example of a mid-Victorian Atlas. Size: the Atlas measures approx. 40cms x 26.5cms. Condition: The Atlas has been restored to a very high standard. Original embossed covers with marks and stains, rebacked incorporating the old spine, with new black’Bible’ endpapers. The contents is in a very good condition, the only map with any real loss, now repaired being that of the Eastern Hemisphere (a small portion of the sea was missing, now replaced – see photo). All 31 maps present, held tightly, each with titles in an old hand on the back in ink (see photo). All with fine original handcolouring.
