MAPPE-MONDE Dressee sur les Observations de Mrs de L’Academie Royale des Sciences et quelques autres et sur les memoirs les plus recens par M. Printed in the early 1740s, a scarce late edition of the Covens & Mortier double-hemisphere world map. This famous map, featuring the routes of the most important ocean explorers between 1542 and 1741, was revised over the course of several decades. This revision is the first to illustrate the routes and discoveries of the Russian explorers Tchirikow and Bering. Some other noteworthy features include. Four polar projections at the map’s corners. A highly conjectural configuration of the Aleutian Islands; Halley’s first sighting of Antarctic ice; Pelsart’s route from Australia to Java; a unique depiction of the California peninsula; and curious, partial sketches of. Australia (with Tasmania far separated). This late state of the map includes information obtained by M. De L’Isle from the Royal Academy of St. The map remains in good shape for its great age. The most obvious flaws are the chips and small tears about the margins; there is only one slight incursion of a tear into the image itself, at top center. There are also several small, hardly noticeable horizontal tears along center fold; these are repaired with ordinary tape on the reverse, as seen in the photo. An historically significant map, especially uncommon in this late (final) edition. The image measures 25″ X 19.5″ on a 27.5″ X 22.5″ sheet. Ships promptly & securely.
