A New and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great Britain on ye continent of North America containing Newfoundland, New Scotland, New England, New York, New Jersey, Pensilvania, Maryland, Virginia and Carolina. Copper engraving, printed from two plates, joined, with period outline hand-coloring and much more. Overall size is approximately 40 3/4 x 24 3/8 inches, two small tears (closed) along upper half right edge, very minor loss along border at top left side in a few spots, one small tear noted on lower half of left border. Overall a superbly colored, fresh and well-preserved example. VG, Remnants of original paper backing present, which has a framing label from Rosenbach Galleries, 1320 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA at top. This particular map was framed by Rosenbach on Dec. 24, 1924 for Mrs. The famous Beaver Map. Exceptionally colored, and quite vibrant, with a brilliant focal point of this hand-coloring being the inset of the Niagara Falls with the Industrious Beavers in the foreground. One of the first and most important cartographic documents relating to the ongoing dispute between France and Great Britain over boundaries separating their respective American colonies…. The map was the primary exponent of the British position during the period immediately following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 – DEGREES OF LATITUDE. All territory south of the St. Lawrence River and eastern Great Lakes is shown as British. Numerous notations relating to territorial claims, Indian tribes, the fur trade, and the condition of the land cover the face of the map. This map shows the early eighteenth century postal routes in the British colonies, and is frequently called the first American postal map. There are four insets, including a large map of Carolina and a plan of Charleston. On this issue, the former shows numerous additions, with Carolina divided into counties and with parishes named for the first time. At lower left (Cummins insert 1) is a map of Florida and the Deep South, and the Gulf of Mexico, which is based on a map by Thomas Nairne, the Indian agent for South Carolina. A printed inscription on this inset relating to the Cherokees states: one of ye kings of this Nation was in England in 1730. The most striking feature of the map is the large and brilliantly colored vignette (Cummings insert 5) which gives the map its popular name. It consists of an early view of Niagara Falls, with a colony of crudely depicted beavers at work in the foreground. Pritchard holds that the beaver was an appropriate image for the North American map for two reasons: the animal’s importance to the fur trade, and its industrious nature. No finer example of this map is currently offered, nor has one of this quality been offered for some time. Flaws are very minor and in no way detract from the overall appeal. The map has not been removed from the frame it was given in 1924 (see Rosenbach label) to identify any past restorations, but close examination of map image does not reveal evidence. Depending upon your resource, there are up to 7 different states of this map in existence. Some are based on other revisions to the content. The most comprehensive explanation of these different states currently available is found on the Stanford University website and relates to their copy of this map. Using their guide, this map I offer is of the sixth state (6) and I would further sub-categorize it as 6a, as I have identified two different versions of this state. The first, earlier state, lacks the word Georgia being engraved just under the word Yamesee and in place of the previous 350 men within the lower portion of Carolina (as delineated in the inset map in the lower left corner showing the Florida and the Gulf of Mexico). The later state has the word Georgia engraved here and the reference to 350 men removed. Other references: Stevens and Tree Map Collectors’ Circle, Map Collectors’ Series No. 39: Comparative Cartography, 1967 No. 343-344 identify the map I offer as the third state (of five), based on publisher and also that it is the first to show the inset of Carolina divided into counties and with named parishes. CUMMING, SOUTHEAST IN EARLY MAPS No. 158 DEGREES OF LATITUDE 19 (state 5 [or e] except it is lacking Georgia). Reinhartz, HERMAN MOLL GEOGRAPHER, pp. SCHWARTZ & EHRENBERG, pp. Some lots will fit into flat rate envelopes and some will not. Items are not returnable unless they are not as described.
